The Sea Isle City WIFFLE Classic is an annual charity event for Autism Speaks and is usually held the second Saturday in August. This tournament is our favorite of the year! We’ve competed for the past four years and never fail to have a great time! As soon as the registration goes up, we jump right on it because there is a 55 team cap and we have yet to see less than that show up. The tournament takes place at the Dealy Baseball Fields in Sea Isle City, NJ.
Rules:
– Yellow bats
– Unscuffed balls
– 6 balls = walk
– 2 strikes = out (even if you foul the 2nd strike)
– Medium pitch
– Round robin play
– Top 2 teams from each division make playoffs
– 3 to 5 players per team (only 3 play in the field, but everyone can bat)
– 5 inning games
– Extra innings start with bases loaded
– Awards given out for best team name, best jerseys, funnest team, home run derby king/queen, and the top 3 teams
– $155 per team
These are the kind of rules we LOVE! The only one we would change is 2 strikes equals an out. One suggestion would be to allow two fouls before you “foul out.” A simple change that could make for a little more hitting. This is always a tough rule though, especially on the triangle shaped fields, and as stated before, there were 55 teams in attendance so it certainly helps keep the games flowing. There are people everywhere watching, playing, and having fun. It’s hot every year so most people bring canopies to create some shade. Way Too Beautiful even brought their own pool! The 55 teams are split into a bunch of four team and five team divisions. Here is where you play each other in round robin. You play each team in your division once, guaranteeing that you’ll play at least three games before the day is over, and the top two teams will make it into the playoffs. Throughout the day there is music playing, food for sale, Chinese auctions, and the home run derby. The home run derby only costs $5 to get 10 swings and goes to a great cause. Unfortunately our day was cut short so we did not get so see who won the home run derby, best team name, best jerseys, or the tournament… but before we left, Way Too Beautiful took home the “Fun-Stars” award for being the funnest team at the tournament. A much deserved win! Brian Aylmer continues to do great things with this tournament and we already cannot wait until next year. WE HIGHLY SUGGEST that you go to this tournament! Just make sure you keep an eye on our homepage for when it gets posted because it doesn’t take long for this 55 team cap to be filled, which definitely speaks to truly how great of a tournament it is!
